Empowering Workers: The Journey of NWUC

The National Workers Unity Centre (NWUC) began its journey in 2015 with a mission to unite and empower both formal and informal workers across Bangladesh. Over the years, it has emerged as a significant voice for labor rights, embodying principles of organization, training, and movement to improve working conditions and secure better livelihoods for workers.

Establishment and Milestones

NWUC’s dedication to organizing workers culminated in its official registration on January 25, 2021, following seven years of advocacy and grassroots mobilization. The federation was co-founded by Mrs. Sultana Begum, its President, and Mohammad Elias, the General Secretary—both of whom bring over 35 years of experience in the trade union movement. Under their leadership, NWUC has expanded its reach to 40 districts and now represents 235,568 members, including both paid and unpaid workers from 12 socio-economic sectors.

In its most recent congress, held at the National Press Club auditorium, NWUC elected a 35-member executive committee to guide the organization for the next three years. This democratically elected leadership reflects the federation’s commitment to transparency and inclusivity.

Organizational Structure and Vision

NWUC operates as an independent, democratic organization free from political influence. Its constitution, approved by the Department of Labour, underscores its mission to protect workers’ rights and ensure decent working conditions. The federation focuses on empowering women workers, especially in the ready-made garment (RMG) sector, by promoting safe workplaces, leadership opportunities, and awareness of legal rights.

With a strong emphasis on education and training, NWUC equips its members with knowledge of labor laws, leadership skills, and life skills beyond the workplace. The organization also offers legal aid and advocates for gender equality, fair wages, and improved workplace safety.

Key Achievements

  1. Union Expansion: NWUC has successfully organized trade unions across industries, including garments, construction, and domestic work.
  2. Advocacy and Campaigns: It has led campaigns for wage increases, better working conditions, and the implementation of labor laws.
  3. Support for Women Workers: NWUC has prioritized women’s leadership development and implemented programs to address workplace discrimination and ensure maternity benefits.
  4. Training and Development: Through national and basic-level training programs, NWUC has built a strong cadre of leaders equipped to advocate for workers’ rights.

Future Goals

NWUC aims to strengthen its presence across Bangladesh, enhance worker solidarity, and amplify grassroots voices in policy discussions. By fostering collaboration with national and international trade unions, it seeks to ensure the implementation of ILO conventions and uphold labor laws.

As NWUC continues its journey, it remains committed to creating a self-reliant, prosperous workforce, ensuring dignity, safety, and fairness for all workers. Its transformative approach stands as a testament to the power of collective action and dedicated leadership.
